Biliary Colic
Introduction
  • Biliary colic: pain produced by stones intermittently obstructing the cystic duct

  • Cholelithiasis: presence of gallstones in the gallbladder

  • Cholecystitis: inflammation of the gallbladder, usually due to infection

  • Choledocolithiasis: presence of gallstones in the common bile duct

  • Cholangitis: inflammation of the common bile duct, usually due to infection

Don’t forget the unflattering but time-honoured mnemonic that’s helped students remember the risk factors of gallstones for years.

The 4 F’s stand for:

  1. Female

  2. Fat

  3. Forty

  4. Fair skinned
